Watching a watch run is often something of a paradox: the case catches the eye, but everything that gives it life happens in the shadow of a steel caseback or beneath a sapphire crystal measuring a few square millimetres.
On the watchmaking web, two worlds still too often ignore one another. On one side are polished brand communications and collectors’ stories focused on market value, the rarity of a dial or the prestige of a logo. On the other is workshop literature: highly specialised, dense and sometimes impenetrable, reserved for those who work at the bench.
Décalibre was born with the ambition of building a bridge between these two worlds. Not to oversimplify mechanics, but to explain how it really works: with its friction constraints, tolerances to a hundredth of a millimetre, machining compromises and design choices.
This Journal Décalibre, which will appear every four months, extends that approach. In each issue, we will take the time to explore an iconic calibre, rediscover a pioneer whose calculations still guide our balance wheels, examine a key word in the watchmaking lexicon and trace the major milestones of technical history. You will also discover the tools that bridge theoretical diagnosis and workbench practice.
Welcome to our pages, and welcome to the gears of time.
